How to properly wash a hijab
Here you'll learn the basics of how to properly care for your hijab. This way you can keep your beautiful everyday companion in top condition and be ready to go again in no time.
Tips for washing your hijab:
- Gentle washing is essential, which means hand washing! Washing your hijab in the washing machine will put too much strain on the delicate fabric. Therefore, it's better to roll up the sleeves.
- All you need is a washbasin or a clean sink. Fill both with warm water. The temperature should be around 30 degrees Celsius, so nice and lukewarm and also pleasant for your hands. Then add a small amount of liquid detergent for delicate fabrics.
- Very important: Light and colored hijabs should be washed separately. Use a gentle detergent for colored scarves. But make sure it's bleach-free. You want your scarves to retain their vibrant, unfaded colors.
- Is your hijab heavily soiled, perhaps even with stubborn stains? Then treat it with a gentle dab of a mild stain remover before washing. Again, avoid using a bleaching agent.
- Now you can take a break – let the hijab soak in the washing solution for a while. This allows it to do its work for you – and you can put your feet up for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Then you begin to wash the scarf gently. It's best to wash it inside out so it keeps its shape. Is it clean? Then rinse it in clean water and gently wring it out.
- To dry your hijab, hang it either on a drying rack in the bathroom or in the fresh air. Never dry it over something hot, such as a radiator. If drying it outside, do not hang it in direct sunlight, as this will fade the colors.
- A hijab should absolutely never be put in a tumble dryer! Please always let it air dry.
- The best way to iron out creases is at a medium temperature.
